Cosette arrived at SAFE at the very beginning of May 2021.

Cosette is a domestic Muscovy. She and her sister Olivia surprised us by showing us that they can fly, and do so over quite a long distance.

Cosette is Dais’s companion, who protects her when the other ducks’ advances are too ardent. She is independent, but prefers the security and warmth of the barn to the extreme temperatures of the outdoors. She loves to watch dishes being prepared, and never misses an opportunity to beg for a piece of fruit or greens, pawing into bowls without embarrassment. Once the bowls have been distributed, she knows where to find the eggs we keep for the birds, and helps herself to the feast without hesitation.

Like her companions who arrived at the same time, she was one of a series of ducklings we kept and others we placed. There was a craze in Montreal to adopt ducklings thanks to a post on TikTok urging their adoption. Young people sold them on street corners or in schoolyards.

Responsible parents tried to place them, but many were abandoned in parks or on the streets.
